We’ve had a 6 week break since round 3 at Oulton Park. In this time I’ve been looking over the areas that needed improving in my riding and working hard to gain in these areas. There is always things a rider can improve on, and especially when you aren’t winning races, something can always be improved upon to get on to that top step of the podium, which is where we want to be.
I was looking forward to getting back out racing in the British Supersport Evo class, and having 2 races around the Snetterton Circuit. Snetterton is built on an old airfield, so the track is very flat. I enjoy riding there as it’s very technical with a lot of the corners linking in to one another, making for a good rhythm when you get it right.
We had two practice sessions on Friday. Making steady progress throughout the day, we were pleased with the feeling on the bike at the end of the second session. I’d gone a few tenths under my best lap time around there, and sitting 4th fastest Evo.
Saturday was qualifying and the 10 lap sprint race. I dropped another 4 tenths in qualifying and qualified 4th Evo bike. I was pleased we were making good progress each session and felt we could have a strong race. I got a great start in the sprint race and slotted behind Joe Collier and Marshall Neill, the riders who were first and second in the championship. We managed to get towed along by the main Supersport guys for a few laps, which helped us get in to a fast rhythm. I was pushing hard and on lap 6 I made a little mistake and just lost the back of them. I managed to still put in some good lap times, but just couldn’t reel them back in. Bjorn Estment passed me, but crashed a few laps later. I managed to keep my head down and come home in 3rd position. I was really happy to have started the weekends racing off with a podium, and was a huge confidence boost for Sundays 15 lap feature race.
We made some changes for warm up and made good progress with that, managing to put in my best lap time of the weekend. I got another strong start in race 2, and was the leading Evo rider after lap 1 and sitting 9th overall against the main Supersports. I held Joe Collier off for a few laps, but he managed to get passed and open up a small gap. The dice for 2nd and 3rd was a great battle between myself, Jamie Perrin, Marshall Neill and Matthew Paulo. We had plenty of passes through out the race, changing positions every lap. I managed to slot in to 2nd going in to the last lap. I put in a strong fast final lap and held off Jamie Perrin for the drag to the line which saw me finish 2nd with Jamie, 0.02 of a second behind me, in 3rd place. We were side by side coming across the line, so on the cool down lap neither of us were sure who had finished 2nd. I was pumped when I saw it was me that got 2nd, as I felt I had really worked hard for that position and it was nice to come out on top of a good battle. I finished the 15 lap race 3.5 seconds down on Joe, which is the closest I’ve been all season, so I’m really happy to be making clear progress in the Evo Championship. I felt I raced the best I have over the weekend. I was strong throughout the entirety of the race and was able to battle well with the guys who I’ve been a little behind at the first 3 rounds.
With two strong results I’ve moved from 4th in the championship to 2nd. I’m really happy to have made good progress this weekend. I had a lot of fun riding the CPE Motosport Kawasaki ZXR-600. The team worked hard all weekend improving the bike and giving me a great machine to fight for the podium. We are off to Knockhill in Scotland for round 5 in two weeks’ time and I’m looking forward to getting back out and working hard to get the results I know we can achieve!
